About
The exhibition was created to mark the 30th anniversary of the opening of the Dancing House. It presents the history of one of Prague's most famous modern buildings, its architecture, and lesser-known moments connected with its creation. It is held under the auspices of the Dagmar and Václav Havel Vision 97 Foundation.
The Dancing House is inseparably linked with the name of Václav Havel and with the values of freedom, openness, and living in truth, which he helped bring back to Czech society after 1989. Today, these values also include respect for human dignity and the right to freely live one's identity. That is why the Dancing House stands behind LGBTQ+ rights as a natural part of the broader story of freedom that began to be written in Prague after the Velvet Revolution. Every year during the Prague Pride Festival, it lights up in rainbow colours to remind us that freedom only makes sense when it applies to everyone.
The exhibition Dancing House: The Story of an Iconic Building offers previously unpublished archival materials, newly discovered photographs from the construction, and extensive photo documentation of the building's transformations over the thirty years of its existence.
The exhibition also traces the story of the site itself on the corner of Jiráskovo náměstí and Rašínovo nábřeží. It includes historical photographs dating back to 1860, as well as unique period shots. One of the biggest highlights is the exceptional opening of the Dancing House's technical spaces, including a view into the inner courtyard – places normally off-limits to visitors.
The exhibition was created in collaboration with the prestigious Frank O. Gehry Foundation and also focuses on the architects behind the building. On display are personal items and awards belonging to Vlado Milunić and Václav Havel, original construction documentation, and period press coverage of the building's creation. Among the exceptional exhibits are models of the Dancing House by Frank Gehry and Vlado Milunić, complemented by a new, detailed 1:18 scale model standing over two metres tall, a foldout model, and unrealised design proposals.
The exhibition also features original glass tables by architect Eva Jiřičná, original doors, lighting, and office furniture from the 1990s, as well as the popular lenticular "morphing" images. The tour also includes 3D visualisations on large touchscreens and digital presentations on iPads. You can also enjoy the accompanying programme and guided tours.
