About
What to expect
"We're from Malaysia and we're queer!" With these words, the punk band Shh…Diam! opens their concert — a group trying to live freely in a strictly Muslim country, both on stage and off.
Malaysia is a country where political power has for decades been closely intertwined with religious conservatism, and where LGBTQ+ people are systematically discriminated against and arrested. The documentary offers an intense look at several years in the life of the four-piece band, who boldly stand up against patriarchy and strict sharia rules. Their fight for equal rights plays out not only at demonstrations and concert stages, but also behind the closed doors of their homes, where they seek understanding and acceptance from their own families with equal determination.
The film explores themes of political activism, bodily transformation and self-expression. It shows how difficult it is to live authentically in a country that harshly suppresses any difference when it comes to sexuality and gender.
The evening is held in collaboration with the One World festival.
