About
Why do parents and grandparents sometimes react to queer topics with rejection or misunderstanding? Why does even an insensitive reaction often not mean they don't love us or don't want to understand us, but rather reflects a different context of life experiences? How can we talk to each other so that communication leads to mutual understanding and acceptance rather than conflict? What can you do when your family stops being a place of security – whether due to non-acceptance, conflict, or other forms of instability?
The talk will try to answer not only these questions, but will also offer perspectives on other topics related to intergenerational misunderstanding that may be weighing on you.
Moderated by Jana Soukupová, who leads support groups for families of LGBT+ children within the sbarvouven counselling service of the Prague Pride association. Since her studies in social pedagogy, she has long been dedicated to finding ways to support young people in difficult life situations.
She is an experienced educator and also worked as a crisis interventionist at the Safety Line for children and adolescents, where she encountered a wide range of life stories and difficulties. She also works as an individual coach and serves as the professional guarantor of the sbarvouven.cz counselling service. As the mother of a queer son, she also draws on her own experience, through which she has confirmed how important support is not only for people going through coming out, but also for their families and loved ones.
